Wikis

After reading the chapter on wikis, I now understand what they are all about. Prior to reading, I didn't really understand what a wiki was. I knew about wikipedia and actually referenced it often, but I didn't realize that it could be added on and edited by anyone. I am actually pretty impressed!

I can't help but think of ways I can incorporate wikis in my classroom as I read. I am really enjoying this book and the wiki chapter is written in a way that is so practical. I have 160 students, currently, so it might be difficult to maintain a wiki for all students. I thought that in health and PE, we could maintain a class wiki on a particular subject. Students could take notes throughout a unit, and every so often, we could add as a class. Other classes could make additions and edits, and finally, there would be an entire wiki on one unit. Students could use the wiki as a study guide in the end. Does anyone else have ideas for ways to use wikis with large groups of students?

Jen, I like your idea; I want to use it as well. Creating a study guide using a wiki is awesome. I believe it will enhance your students mastery of the concepts in each unit. I was thinking of other ways to use wikis with large groups other than my idea of 101 ways to be physically active. Perhaps we could expand on the CDC's Body and Mind site (http://www.bam.gov). We could have our students create a wiki of the physical activities not listed on this site and they can apply the body parts worked, how to play it safe..... but make it our own by being more creative- just a thought. What do you think?

Jen, maybe its more a way for you to post thing to them, but then I guess a blog could be used. You could put them in small groups and each group could work on their own wiki.

Jen, I really like your ideas for using the wiki as a study guide. Plus how many PE teachers are willing to get this involved with technology. I think it is great that you could use a wiki for PE and health classes. Also maybe parents could access it at home to help their children at home study for exams and so forth.
